A while ago I’ve backed the Trench Crusade Backdrop Books Kickstarter by Jon Hodgson from Handiwork Games.

I’ve bought Visions of War 3 and World War Ruins in Din A3.

As soon as they arrived I’ve set up a scenarios with miniatures in 28mm scale and terrain with single pages of the books as backdrops.

The motives on the A3 prints seem very large with miniatures in front of them. So I’ve tried to compensate with different lenses: 21mm, 55mm, and 100mm which all resulted in ok-ish outcomes. But it depended on the chosen backdrop as well.

When you place a miniature or piece of terrain close to the backdrop their shadows will be cast on the backdrop. That’s why I’ve placed the backdrops further away. Also I’ve place them not parallel to the camera, but slightly angled. This way the backdrop was able to catch more daylight and thus brighten the backdrop (that worked because of my studio setup – this might not be the case for your setup).

However I did not try photographs with the “wall-only” backdrops. This will be another session to review.
